Do More Than Vote - New York

Devote 5 minutes or 5 dollars to Democratic Victory

All of us can afford some time and money

But none of us can afford another two years of a Republican controlled Congress. The good news is that Democrats are poised to take back the House and the Senate, as well as state houses nationwide. New Yorkers can help progressives win, but only if we Do More Than Vote!

Devote 1 minute anywhere

Stay Informed. Text NYDEMS to 56658 and you'll begin receiving targeted action alerts on your cell. The state party will send you texts about big political rallies in your area, protests and events, and campaign efforts. Don't miss the opportunity to stay informed.

Devote 5 minutes...then Election Day

Become an election monitor and help ensure that the election runs smoothly and securely. Learn how to be an effective poll watcher at one of the trainings sponsored by the New York Democratic Lawyers Committee. Then, put your skills to use and help ensure our most basic right by monitoring a polling place. Email Hal (hal_hodes@yahoo.com), Matt (mem41@cornell.edu), or visit the site to learn more and sign up.

Devote 10 minutes at your desk

Call talk radio shows to let listeners know what you think. Getting Democratic voices onto the conservative-controlled airwaves is a must. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) gives you the numbers to call and talking points to use. Or, if you have a favorite local radio show, call it, and then let us know about it so we can recommend the show to others.

Devote a half-hour at your desk

Write letters to media across the country- the perfect way to express approval of or disdain for the news and views of the day. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) makes it simple. To get issue specific talking points: click on an issue, then enter your zip code. Your letter is emailed automatically.

Devote a few hours at your computer

Make Calls anytime, anywhere as long as you have access to the internet and a phone. Use Moveon.org's Call for Change program to call voters in crucial districts all across the country. You can make one or one hundred calls, and take breaks as often as you like. Their program is user-friendly and proven to work, so get started today.

Devote a couple weekday hours

Make calls from Manhattan or Brooklyn to key voters in several competitive New York Congressional districts with the Working Families Party. Don't let the name fool you- they're as progressive as the Democrats, and an appealing outlet for swing voters who don't associate with either party. Contact Patrick (tbcvolunteer@workingfamiliesparty.org, 917.862.2880) to sign up. No experience necessary- they'll happily train you.

Devote an evening

Call voters while enjoying great company. The Manhattan Young Democrats (MYD) and ACT NOW run weeknight phonebanks to call voters in districts with important state and national elections. MYD: president@manhattanyoungdems.org or 646-418-7552. ACT NOW: info@actnowny.org or 212-714-7125.

Devote a Saturday or Sunday

Head to PA, CT, RI, NJ, or Westchester. Travel to battleground districts to talk with voters and be back by nightfall with ACT NOW and Manhattan Young Dems bus trips. No experience necessary- they will train you and provide all the necessary materials. Contact MYD: president@manhattanyoungdems.org, 646-418-7552 or ACT NOW: info@actnowny.org, 212-714-7125 to learn more about dates and times.

Devote some cash

Help take back the country. If you want to help the Democratic Party win in every precinct in all fifty states for decades to come, help support the 50 State Strategy. Or, if you're more interested in influencing specific races this year, help support Moveon.org's 2006 Election Plan or check out ActBlue's fundraising pages

Raise your spirits

You're not in this alone. If you want to attend fun, energizing events with like-minded liberals, then find your local Drinking Liberally chapter, check out the best political comics at the next Laughing Liberally show, or watch the latest progressive movie at Screening Liberally's monthly viewing.

Take the initiative

Start your own group. If you're looking for an excuse to get together with other Democrats, then consider forming a progressive book group, starting a liberal knitting group, sponsoring a letter-writing party, or coming up with your own idea. These groups are easy to start and fun to be a part of.
