Do More Than Vote - Los Angeles

Devote 5 minutes or 5 dollars to Democratic Victory

All of us can afford some time and money

But none of us can afford another two years of a Republican controlled Congress. The good news is that Democrats are poised to take back the House and the Senate, as well as state houses nationwide. Los Angeles progressives can help Democrats win, but only if we Do More Than Vote!

Devote 5 minutes at your desk

Get Informed. Become a part of MoveOn.org and get updates and alerts about current issues and easy actions you can take to influence your lawmakers. And, check out the Courage Campaign- a statewide 527 that makes it easy to fight the right in California.

Devote 10 minutes at your desk

Call radio talk shows to let listeners know what you think. Getting Democratic voices onto the conservative-controlled airwaves is a must. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) gives you numbers to call and talking points to use. For some local flavor, try these conservative stations: KFI AM 640 (800-520-1534) or KABC AM 790. If you prefer to call a progressive show, try: Progressive Talk AM 1150 (877-520-1150), or Pacifica Radio for Southern California 90.7 FM (818-985-5735).

Devote a half-hour at your desk

Write letters to media across the country- the perfect way to express approval of or disdain for the news and views of the day. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) makes it simple. To get issue specific talking points: click on an issue, then enter your zip code. Your letter is emailed automatically.

Devote an hour at a computer

Anytime, anywhere as long as you have access to the internet and a phone. Use Moveon.org's phone program to call voters in crucial districts all across the country. You can make one or one hundred calls, and take breaks as often as you like. Their program is user-friendly and proven to work, so get started today.

Devote a couple weekday hours

Call voters to voice your support for Congressional candidates & statewide candidates. SoCal Grassroots coordinates phone banking for many different California progressives. You don’t have to have made calls before: they will provide instructions, lists, and scripts. Email chair@socalgrassroots.org or call 805-208-0874 to start changing voters' minds.

Devote a Saturday or Sunday

Knock on doors. SoCal Grassroots organizes day trips to battleground districts so you can talk face-to-face with potential voters- the best way to ensure their support. No experience necessary- SoCal Grassroots will train you and provide all the necessary materials. Email chair@socalgrassroots.org or call 805-208-0874 to learn more.

Devote some cash

Help take back the country. If you want to help the Democratic Party win in every precinct in all fifty states for decades to come, help support the 50 State Strategy. If you're more interested in influencing specific races this year, help support MoveOn.org's 2006 Election Plan or check out ActBlue's fundraising pages.

Or, Devote some cash

Shop for change. That's right, you can help Democrats win through online shopping. Treat yourself to shirts, hats, wristbands, and more from Think Blue Dems, GoodStorm, or Clothing of the American Mind; they all donate proceeds to progressive organizations. For everyday buying, check out BuyBlue.org to support businesses that support your values.

Raise your spirits

You're not in this alone. Check out the monthly Drinking Liberally chapter in Hollywood or the weekly chapter in Pasadena to let loose with like-minded, left-leaning liberals; talk politics while knitting with one of Stitch N' Bitch's many meetings in LA; or find a progressive partner with Democratic Passions, Liberal Hearts, or Democratic Match.

Take the initiative

Start your own group. If you're looking for an excuse to get together with other Democrats, then consider forming a progressive book group, hosting a monthly film club, sponsoring a letter-writing party, or coming up with your own idea. These groups are easy to start and fun to be a part of.
